Your Emotions Are Your Most Valuable Currency

Your emotions are your most valuable currency. I invite you to spend them wisely.
I was navigating some sadness the other day.
I could not focus at home or at work and I was beginning to feel very unmotivated and depressed.
I knew I was “avoiding” my feelings, so I took my own advice.
I closed my eyes and breathed and within 3 seconds the waterfall began. Tears began to flow and I wept and wept until there was no more weeping left.
This btw took about 2 minutes in total.
How could that be?

Jill Bolte Taylor, Harvard brain scientist explains: “When a person has an emotional reaction to something in their environment, there’s a 90 second chemical process that happens in the body; after that, any remaining emotional response is just the person choosing to stay in that emotional loop.”
This is called the “cognitive emotive loop.”
We’ve all been there.
Something happens:
- Your spouse says something that hurts your feelings
- Your colleague at work doesn’t deliver what they promise
- Your kid makes a reckless decision
- Your mother in law judges you, again!
Your brain sends messages to your nervous system (Watch out!!! THREAT!!) and you experience sensations in and on the body. (tight jaw, pit in stomach, achy chest, butterflies in belly)
These sensations make you uncomfortable in your body. (Ehemm…Because they are meant to! They are here to “wake you up”)
Then you drift. You drift to social media, food, shopping, drinking, TV, gossiping, smoking, exercising, meditating, spacing out, over thinking etc… The list goes on.
Anything to distract you from the discomfort you are feeling in your body.
You drift to avoid the discomfort of the wake up call.
When you drift, you disconnect from your innate intelligence – your essence – and you simultaneously disconnect from others because you are simply not available. Your brain is literally offline and in survival mode.
And all of this sucks.
Because being disconnected feels crappy.
Because you don’t know how to get back to that yummy essence you so enjoy.
However, when you allow yourself to take just 90 seconds to actually FEEL your feelings, you unlock the door to your true self, break down your walls and enter your essence and reconnect to your true self once again.
Your true self, your essence is filled with infinite potential and possibility.
Where the gold is.
Where all your power is.
It’s a small price to pay for a big gain in time and energy.
When you take the mere 90 seconds required to BE with what you are feeling in any given moment, you literally create more space inside and out and save hours of energy that you would otherwise spend unconsciously avoiding those reliably uncomfortable feelings.
Don’t short-change yourself and the people you love.
I challenge you this week to find just 90 seconds to BE with your feelings and see what happens.
