You ARE your nervous system
August 9, 2026
You are the central nervous system of your home.
I heard this line at a screening of a new documentary called No Country for Mothers. (I’m hosting a free live gathering inspired by film August 26th— [don’t miss it!]
It hit me hard and brought me straight back to a mothering moment I will never forget.
My seven year old daughter. A knife. A kitchen. A tantrum.
I can feel it in my body as I type this to you..
She was only seven years old but her tantrums were a force of nature. She didn’t just melt down, she erupted. And every time she did, something in me erupted right along with her.
As a single mother navigating three little kids, financial collapse, and a life that looked nothing like what I had hoped or planned, I had been running on survival mode so deeply I didn’t even know it was survival mode.
It was just my life.
And standing in that kitchen, my body trembling, heart racing, completely hijacked by fear — I had one thought:
How do I get this to stop?
Ironically — I had been in mindfulness training for years. I had even been successfully teaching mindfulness to kids, parents and teachers in schools across Chicago.
I knew about presence, about breath work, about awareness.
And still, even with all of that training, at that moment I was completely gone. Lost.
My alarm bells were ringing. Loudly.
And that’s when I realized something that would change everything.
Twenty years ago when I started my mindfulness training — “mindfulness” was the buzzword of the moment. It was the latest mental health trend.
Today, it’s “your nervous system.”
You hear people say:
“My nervous system is dysregulated.”
“I need to regulate my nervous system.”
“Your nervous system needs support.”
As if it’s something separate from you. Something you possess. Something outside of you.
But “your nervous system”?
It’s not a “thing”. It’s not something you own. Or manage.
It’s not separate from you.
In fact, You ARE your nervous system.
And you are so deeply enmeshed with it that everything you experience, every relationship you navigate, every moment of conflict or connection or collapse —is informed by your nervous system.
It creates your life experience.
And here’s what I woke up to that day in the kitchen.
I am actually the nervous system of my home. Of my family. Of all my relationships.
And so are you.
YOU are the nervous system of your home.
Not metaphorically.
Literally.
Your partner, your kids are not just watching you. Your family is not just watching you.
They are tuning into you.
Their nervous systems are co-regulating with yours in every single moment.
When you are triggered— they get triggered.
When you are reactive — they react.
When you are calm and at peace — they feel that too.
I know. That feels like a lot of responsibility.
But I’m not saying this to you to create another thing to be responsible for.
It’s not meant to feel like pressure.
It’s an invitation, a portal.
It’s a reminder to remember how powerful you really are.
Because the moment you become aware and stop running on autopilot, you start coming home to yourself and the whole system shifts.
You have that much power.
That is what I learned that day in the kitchen.
When I shifted, everything shifted around me.
And this is the power of women who are connected to their true nature.
Because you are the creator of your life experience.
This is real power.
And it starts with one thing.
Awareness.
The moment you can see it; your fear, your reactivity, allowing survival mode to run the show, you have a radical choice to make.
And that choice impacts everything.
The reality for women today?
You have been conditioned to be distracted by stress.
To stay tired. Disempowered. Disconnected.
And every time you move out of alignment with your truest nature, your body tells you.
Because your nervous system is your inner alarm system.
Waking you up.
Inviting you back home.
Culture prefers you stay distracted.
That you keep managing the symptoms instead of coming home to the truth.
That you treat yourself like a problem to be fixed rather than a woman to be remembered.
This is your invitation to do something different.
“You are the central nervous system of your home.”
When I heard it in that screening room that night it landed deeply.
Because I knew it was true.
That is what that moment taught me.
For every woman who has ever wondered why her family feels her mood before she’s said a word.
Why it feels like everyone falls apart when she falls apart.
Why the whole house exhales when she finally does.
Why it feels like you are holding it all, all the time.
Because that is what your nervous system is telling you.
This month I am hosting a free live gathering inspired by No Country for Mothers to help you untangle all the ways you’ve been conditioned away from your truest selves and come back home to yourself again.
I’ve invited four extraordinary women panelists to help shape a conversation that I believe every woman on the mothering spectrum needs to be part of right now.
This is the conversation that changes everything and I want your voice in the room.
Because you are not here to be buried under the rubble of your life.
You are here to rise above it and realize your full potential.
The Woman Behind the Mother — August 26th.
It’s Free. It’s Live. And it’s something you don’t want to miss.
