The MJ Quote That Changed My Relationships

January 12, 2025

Do you ever feel like you’re failing to get what you need and desire from your relationships?

Michael Jordan, one of the greatest athletes of all time, famously said: “I’ve failed over and over and over again in my life. And that is why I succeed.”

His words are a reminder that failure isn’t the opposite of success—it’s an essential part of it. Yet getting what you truly want in relationships requires more than just courage to try again and again—it demands your attention and intention.

For years, I struggled with ‘failure’ in my relationships. As a parent and partner.

I tried to protect my family from making ‘catastrophic’ mistakes, shield them from pain, and ensure they wouldn’t experience failure the way I had.

However, life had other plans for me and I was being invited to be more courageous in my relationships and my life.

My first profound lesson came when my marriage ended. What felt like a devastating failure became a mirror, reflecting where I needed to grow.

The bigger challenges came in motherhood– where I had to learn to step back and let my kids fail in school, friendships, and in career and relationships choices as they grew older.

Not easy!!

As painful as it is, I learned that each and every “failure” was truly the opportunity to grow in self-awareness, build resilience and discover strength through the struggle.

For me, being in any relationship is an act of courage that requires strength, honesty, and vulnerability.

Here’s what else I’ve learned: True courage in relationships is surrendering to what is, without trying to fix or control. It’s standing witness to both our own struggles and those of our loved ones, trusting that these challenges are pathways to lasting transformation.

The real fun actually begins when you allow space for failure—yours and others—and create room for evolution, growth and deeper connection.
