Reflect on your 2024 relationships: what worked, what didn’t?
December 15, 2024
Jim Rohn once said, “You are the average of the five people you spend the most time with.”
This reminder emphasizes that the quality of your relationships directly shapes your ability to thrive in your life and cultivate—your happiness, self-worth, health, and overall well-being.
As you approach the end of the year, I bet you, like me, have begun to think about your ‘New Year, New You’ intentions and goals.
Before you dive into planning for what’s next, consider taking a moment to pause to reflect on your most significant relationships and the impact they have had on your quality of life.
Because I know there is so much wisdom to gain when I look back instead of simply looking forward, every year, I dedicate some time to reflect on my most important relationships in my life.
- What’s going well in this relationship?
- What could use some improvement?
- What lessons have I learned?
- What do I still need to learn?
- Where am I growing?
For better or worse, your relationships are some of the greatest teachers in your life.
They mirror your beliefs, highlight your patterns, and offer opportunities for profound personal growth.
With that in mind, I’d like to invite you to take time to look back on your most important relationships and reflect on how the five most important people in your life have influenced you over the past 12 months—for better or for worse.
I suggest you start by creating sacred space.
Set aside 20-30 minutes to reflect, grab a journal, light a candle, play soft music, place photos of each of those five most important people and get started.
#1) Create your list: Who Are Your 5?
Take a moment to identify the five people who have had the most impact on you this year. These might include family members, friends, colleagues, or even a mentor.
Write down their names and their relationship to you…
#2) Reflect on the role they’ve played in your life:
- How have they supported you?
- How have they challenged you?
- In what ways have they helped you grow?
- In what ways have they held you back?
- What patterns in yourself have you noticed when interacting with them?
#3) Questions to Further Guide Your Reflection
Here are a few more prompts to help you dig deeper into how these relationships have shaped your year:
- Gratitude: What are you most grateful for about this person’s presence in your life?
- Growth: How has this relationship pushed you to grow, either positively or through challenges?
- Alignment: Is this relationship aligned with your values and vision for the life you want to create?
- Energy Exchange: Does this relationship energize you, or does it drain you?
- Intentions: What would you like to nurture or shift in this relationship moving forward?
Moving Forward
Reflection is a powerful tool for self-awareness, but it’s also a starting point for intentional action.
After you’ve assessed your relationships, consider how you can strengthen the connections that bring you joy, set boundaries where needed, and nurture the relationships that matter most to you.
Remember, relationships are a two-way street. As you reflect on what others bring to your life, also consider how you’re showing up for them. Are you supporting their growth? Are you aligned with their values? Are you showing up authentically?
The end of the year is a perfect time to take inventory of your relationships—not just to evaluate what’s working or not, but to align with the kind of life and connections you want to cultivate in the new year.
Let’s make 2025 a year of deeper connection, healthier boundaries, and relationships that truly reflect the best version of yourself.
