The first year I was divorced, my kids spent Thanksgiving day with their dad. Needless to say I was not happy about it one bit and definitely not feeling gratitude.
I was heartbroken, angry, sad and depressed.
I was in survival mode.
Sure, in the grand scheme of things, I had much to be grateful for, my and my family’s health, good friends, a roof over my head, food on my table etc…
So yes I SHOULD’VE felt grateful.
“Focus on the positive.” they say. “Put your attention on the good things”
Yeah yeah… easier said than done.
I know this is the season of gratitude but….the truth is just because it’s time to be grateful, doesn’t mean you will automatically FEEL gratitude.
Life happens…Sh#$ happens and not everything feels good. In fact much of life can feel the opposite of good.
When you’re not feeling grateful, it is vital to honor what you’re actually feeling so that you can move up the emotional ladder.
Here are 4 important steps that reliably work to shift the way you’re feeling from a low vibration to a high vibration.
- Awareness: Being aware of how you are feeling when you are feeling it is key. Having mindfulness practice is fundamental to building your muscle of awareness.
- Acceptance, Acknowledgement & Allowing: Fully embracing what you actually experiencing opens you up to true transformation.
- Willingness to Feel: The key to getting to gratitude is feeling all your feelings first, including the unpleasant ones.
- Appreciation: Once you’ve moved through your emotions, consciously shift your focus to appreciation for your willingness to do so! It’s a big deal!
Obviously, step one—awareness—is the most important, because you cannot change what you’re not aware of.
But cultivating awareness starts in the body.
