Are you addicted to resistance?
August 6, 2023
Last week I told you about my emotional morning and how I let my tears flow without resistance.
I mentioned that this is a learned skill.
And I wanted to talk more about that with you.
It took me a minute to understand what that truly meant,
And a little bit longer to trust my capacity for putting it into practice in my everyday life.
(Fast forward to a parent teacher conference where I found myself weeping with gratitude)
The truth is we are a culture addicted to NOT feeling our feelings.
In fact, we are addicted to resisting our feelings.
We would rather scroll, drink, shop, sex, binge, work, eat, and run then feel just about anything.
Why?
For a few reasons:
- It is vulnerable to truly FEEL all our feelings as a human being. We tend to worry that we won’t be able to handle what comes up, so we control instead.
- We have been conditioned to NOT be aware of our deepest feelings and emotions.
- We don’t want to make others uncomfortable by being ‘too much’.
- We think we don’t have time.
The irony however is:
- Vulnerability is the key to intimacy.
- Awareness is the key to freedom.
- When we show up fully and authentically, we give others permission to do the same.
- We rob ourselves of valuable energy when we ignore our feelings and emotions.
The thing is your feelings are here for a reason. They are here to be felt. They have intelligence and a purpose.
When you ignore, avoid or deny them, you deny the truth of who you are.
And there is a huge cost to repressing your feelings.
There are the obvious ones like stress, anxiety, and poor health. However there are far greater costs to us personally and collectively.
When you repress your feelings, you turn off your centers of intelligence, you repress access to your power, your purpose, your creativity, your innovation, your aliveness.
You become less of you.
And you are less available for your relationships.
When you learn to trust your feelings and emotions and learn from them, you become wiser, more discerning, more creative, more intuitive and more connected to yourself.
When you allow your feelings you create space for the true you to come forward.
You come back home to your true empowered self.
And from this place, you are free to authentically connect with the people around you.
It takes a lot of life force energy to hold your feelings and emotions in.
Is it worth it?
Don’t rob yourself of your most valuable resources.
Trust your feelings, trust yourself.
You can handle it.
And I promise you will love what you see on the other side.
in love,

“Annmarie helped me move from the unconscious to the conscious in my parenting. By looking at stuck patterns that warranted the same undesired results, Annmarie helped me become more aware of not only my kids behavior but my own. Because of her, I was able to shift out of auto pilot and create meaningful change for the whole family.”
