What happens when we parent like we garden?

Roots of Anxiety and Its Inevitable Influence

Along with giving up caffeine 26 years ago, I almost never watch the news, but in light of recent events, I have been watching a bit of news here and there. However, what I noticed in my body after consuming just a bit of it has made me take a closer look at my choices.

I am inviting you to consider the same, if not only for yourself, for the people you love as well as for the collective.

(I am sometimes long winded but hang in there with me.. I get to the point eventually 🙂

In a nutshell, I gave up caffeine because of the impact it had on how I felt in my body.  It wasn’t until after I gave it up that I even realized how calm it felt to be in my body caffeine free. 

The same became true for me while consuming the news. I started to see how inflammatory and drama-driven news affected my nervous system. Unknowingly, I was filling myself with fear and anxiety.

The solution was simple: eliminate the sources of discomfort.

Here’s what I’ve learned: Our bodies aren’t designed to absorb the trauma delivered through the news, especially when it’s filled with graphic visuals.

If we absorb fear, trauma, and drama from these images, we must learn to effectively release these emotions, or they will unconsciously affect our lives and relationships.

Here are some tips for managing strong emotions and reactivity:

  •  Recognize what an activated nervous system feels like in your body. Do you feel the rush of adrenaline? How do you channel that energy?

  • Pay attention to how you release uncomfortable feelings. Do you talk to others about your outrage? Share your opinions on social media? Get impatient with those who disagree?
  • If you sense an activated nervous system, try breathing exercises: Inhale for 4, exhale for 6 for 2-5 minutes. Pause, ground yourself, and feel your feet on the earth for 2-5 minutes.
  • Consider taking a break from the news for a while and observe the change in your body. Like me, you might experience a much calmer nervous system.

 

When you learn to create peace in your own body you can raise your vibrational frequency and radiate that light, empowering others to do the same while having a positive impact on our collective human family.
